Keraton Yogyakarta

Known as Javanese cultural town, Yogyakarta has many heritage sites and it is always related with the history of the past. Once you visit Yogyakarta, you must visit Keraton Yogyakarta or Royal Palace. The palace is the home of Yogyakarta ruler called Sultan and the family. This place is located on the center of the town with the Alun-alun Utara (North Square) as the yard and the backyard called Alun-alun Selatan (South Square).
The building is designed in Javanese architecture and the position of this building is in one line with the obelisk and Mount Merapi. This building is still occupied by the Hamengkubuwono dynasty until nowadays.
There are a lot of people spend their time to visit this building while they are in Yogyakarta. This classic and elegant building is not only amazed the visitors but also contains Javanese philosophy in its architecture. The gamelan and some performances of dances abd puppet are often performed on the north to south halls as well as on the courtyards, pavilions and
domiciles.
Nowadays the Keraton Yogyakarta is the home of Sultan Hamengkubuwono X. The part of the Keraton used by the sultan to do his duty is called Purworetno.
Another thing that is interesting to see in this Keraton is Taman Sari. It is located on the southwest of the Keraton and it needs only around 5 minutes walking to get to this Taman Sari. In this site, you will see the bathing pools that was used to used by the Sultan as his secret place.
